Seafood with Street Cred

Michelle sent in LOBSTAH (Lobster). I don't know why I think this is funny, but it is. I just imagine it's very hard to use a turn signal when your hands are gigantic claws.

Plus there is something a bit charming about that spelling, no? Makes you want to spit on your screen a little.

I would expect this to be from Maine, not North Carolina. In Maine, the spelling would be phonetically correct. I see no problem with the spelling.

This is not "street cred" in Maine or North Carolina, nor is it "phonetically correct" unless you're pretending to be Marshall Dodge.

Lots of people from Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts drop "r" from some words (and add it to others). People who actually live here know it as the mark of uneducated boobs, not authenticity.

I would have expected Maine or possibly Massachusetts, also. Many of my friends from the chatrooms (the early morning crew) pronouce many of their words like that.

I grew up in Vermont. Generally that accent was just a sign of which region you grew up in. It had nothing to do with "uneducated boobs" OR "authenticity."

Now I want some lobstah.
