Larisa S. sent in this gem. She writes: I finally tracked down one I've been trying to get for months. GratefuL: This is "When 6 is not enough spaces."
So this last one is a little tricky, but I think it still means grateful. I mean, there is no hideous 8 to really make it official, but I have my reasons.
What gives it away you ask? The hand in this one has no middle finger. After a quick internet search or two I discovered that Jerry Garcia of The Grateful Dead had no middle finger on his right hand. Those crafty little hippies! (Picture snapped by Diona)

that is a left hand on the plate...
I believe that might be sign language for eight (though I could be wrong on that)
Yep, the hand is an approximation of the American Sign Language number eight - thumb touching middle finger is eight. (Thumb on pinkie is six, thumb to ring finger seven, thumb to middle eight and the "okay" sign - thumb to first finger is 9 in context.)
Grateful plates really grate on my nerves.
Good catches!
Anon fight!
Actually the thumb is still prevalent in this photo. It's not an ASL eight.
And to the first person who said it's a left hand... Uh, it could be both, just depends on which way you look at it, prone or supine.
The hand could be the right... if you are looking at the palm.
Always a happy day to see my plate on the site! :o)
Well, at least we can all agree that adding Ginormous letters before and after your plate is just plain awful!
In case you want to tag it (I noticed it's hard to tell if you're not familiar with it) the first one is a special edition Crater Lake plate from Oregon. =)
i don't know what that plate says, when i first saw it, i read "Grandful". i wish i had seen who was driving that van. It definitely seemed like it would have been a hippie.
I'm with Diona, I saw Grandful on that last one. That first plate though... I bow to you Larisa, great catch!
thanks Lady! That's a big compliment coming from you!
wv: gista: a male sister ??
Well, I guess we can applaud the ingenuity of the top one getting past the 6 space limit, but whenever they're asked for their lic. plate # they're going to have to say, "rate foo" out loud, followed by a long explanation, then probably followed by, "You have to see it in person"
I'm impressed by the first driver's unwillingness to abbreviate or remove any letters from the word. In fact they are probably breaking the law to get their full word plastered on the back of their car.
i thought since there's four fingers that maybe the four meant "A". but then it would say "GRAFUL".
